Established in 2007 by a group of intrepid travellers, the Cannes Cannes Express is a networking opportunity for delegates travelling from London via Paris to conferences and exhibitions on the Cote d’Azur.
The mystique of rail travel to Cannes
In 1883 the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits created a luxury train to complement its Orient Express to carry travellers from Paris to the Côte d’Azur and beyond. Within a few years the service had been extended to start at Calais and was renamed the Calais-Méditerrannée Express.
By the 1920s the Express was exclusively first-class and had a dining car renowned for its haute cuisine. The sleeping cars were painted blue, which lead to the nickname “le train bleu”, and it was most popular between November and April when many travellers escaped the British winter to spend time on the French Riviera.
From Calais the Express sped to Paris, picked up more passengers and coaches, and departed Paris early evening. The train made stops at Dijon, Châlons and Lyon before reaching Marseille next morning. Further stops followed at all the major resort towns of the Côte d’Azur
Early passengers included the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), Charlie Chaplin, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill and writers F. Scott Fitzgerald, Evelyn Waugh and Somerset Maugham.
In 2007 Eurostar and the TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) became home to the Cannes Cannes Express. Companions and conductors now strive to share and recreate the opulence of the 1920s..well almost..!
